I picked up five books this week, the new Astonishing X-Men, Ultimate Fantastic Four, Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk, Legion of Super-Heroes, and Amazing Spider-Man.  Read on for the reviews…

This was a week that felt like everything was on hold, waiting for something to really happen…

Astonishing X-Men #13 [MARVEL] – take this one for example.  Yes, it touches base with all of the main characters, shows you a snapshot of where they are all “at” at the moment, but nothing really happens.  Let me sum it up…Kitty and Peter kiss, Scott and Emma don’t.  Woah.  I like this series a lot, and this issue is well done…but just not a lot going on.  Yet.

Ultimate Fantastic Four #27 [MARVEL] – even as the first issue of a new arc, this one dwells mostly on the fact that Ben/The Thing is depressed, and the team decides to do something about it.  Ultimately, this appears to have something to do with both Thor becoming president of the US and the Super Skrull…but that is just touched on in this issue.  Put another way, another whole issue with nary a fight.

Ultimate Wolverin vs. Hulk #2 [MARVEL] – Now this one has to be all action all of the time, right?  Well, no.  This is basically issue 1 shown through the Hulks eyes.  Unless you count the fact that it’s alluded to that the Hulk eats a whale, some cows, and maybe (or maybe not) some people, there really isn’t much new here.  Now, next issue looks to be the big fight, which is great, but it seems like issue 1 and 2 could have been smooshed together.  Whatever.

Legion of Super-Heroes #15 (DC) – Have I ever mentioned I liked the old DC logo better?  Well, I do.  Anyway…if you look up “filler issue” in the dictionary, you’d likely see this book as the prime example.  When the letters column is more interesting and illuminating than the main story, you know you have a problem.  This is a collection of “flashbacks” about old Legion storys that might or might not have been, has nothing to do with the recently concluded story, and doesn’t lead into the new “One Year Later” story either.  If I weren’t a completist, I’d wish I left this one on the shelf.

The Amazing Spider-Man #529 [MARVEL] – or, “The one with the new goofy costume.”  Now, I have to say, I’m interested in this upcoming Civil War storyline, but this issue doesn’t really fill us in much as to what’s coming down the line.  Iron Man builds Spidey a new suit with some tech augmentation in it as a sort of bribe to get him on his “side” of this upcoming issue…that we really don’t know much about.  At the very least, there are a lot of things happening in this book, the new costume, a trial run against some common hoods, and the beginnings of a Spider-Man/Iron Man alliance…it should be interesting to see how this plays out.

That’s it for this week…not the best as weeks go, but in a month of now all hell should be breaking loose…so we’ll see what happens! – Brett
